Orient Fantasmé is an exhibition that sheds light on orientalist posters and contrasts them with art works from contemporary artists of the Arab world, such as : Héla Ammar, Meriem Bouderbala, Yasmina Bouziane and Lalla Essaydi. The dialogue between the posters and the contemporary works helps us visulaze how identity was constructed in the colonial era.
The widely distributed advertising posters would present and exoticized and fantasized image of women and the colonies, and draw a picture of the east made by the west.
In this exhibition, Moroccan and Tunisian contemporary female artists, use images to question their own identity and conditions in the society of today and throughout history, and to re-appropriate the female body.
